THE GUEST LIST

Matthew – Fulfilled

Have ever had the opportunity to sit down with your children who are about to get married and help form a list of guests to invite to the event? Creating the guest list and keeping it down to a reasonable and affordable crowd is dicey at best. You don’t want to hurt anyone. There are those “definites” to invite, then in priority order, it seems, people are chosen according to the relationships you have with them…good and bad.

An attender is given the once over in our thoughts until it is decided if he/she should be invited. Some are merely invited because of their position in life, for example, your boss. Jokingly, some might be added because of their ability to give great presents! (Yes, I said that out loud! You know it come up.) Some are kicked off the list. Some are added at the last minute before the formal invitations are mailed. We set perimeters in our minds of who will come and who will not.

Jesus tells another passionate story to the arrogant religious leaders who probably used our same human perimeters for invitations to God’s Kingdom. Human leaders decided who will come and who will not come to the Temple as they plotted to get rid of Jesus, the very Son of God! He set the Chief Priests straight in who will be chosen to come His Wedding Banquet to dine with Him forever. All are invited, but only a few make it…

Matthew 21, The Message
The Story of the Wedding Banquet
22 1-3 Jesus responded by telling still more stories. “God’s kingdom,” he said, “is like a king who threw a wedding banquet for his son. He sent out servants to call in all the invited guests. And they wouldn’t come!

4 “He sent out another round of servants, instructing them to tell the guests, ‘Look, everything is on the table, the prime rib is ready for carving. Come to the feast!’

5-7 “They only shrugged their shoulders and went off, one to weed his garden, another to work in his shop. The rest, with nothing better to do, beat up on the messengers and then killed them. The king was outraged and sent his soldiers to destroy those thugs and level their city.

8-10 “Then he told his servants, ‘We have a wedding banquet all prepared but no guests. The ones I invited weren’t up to it. Go out into the busiest intersections in town and invite anyone you find to the banquet.’ The servants went out on the streets and rounded up everyone they laid eyes on, good and bad, regardless. And so the banquet was on—every place filled.

11-13 “When the king entered and looked over the scene, he spotted a man who wasn’t properly dressed. He said to him, ‘Friend, how dare you come in here looking like that!’ The man was speechless. Then the king told his servants, ‘Get him out of here—fast. Tie him up and ship him to hell. And make sure he doesn’t get back in.’

14 “That’s what I mean when I say, ‘Many get invited; only a few make it.’”

Matthew 22 guest list

Think about it…
–Because of the work of Jesus Christ, Son of God, on a cross, we are ALL invited. We are on the guest list if we accept and believe and follow Jesus! We in!
–Don’t come if you are not prepared the coming of the Groom!
–We must clothe ourselves in His righteousness that only comes from Him. We cannot save ourselves.
–We must be ready for the Groom’s coming, for we are the Bride of Christ as his church!
–Colossians 3:12, “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.”
–Don’t fake it!…”Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.” Romans 13:14

Dear Heavenly Father,
We ACCEPT Your Holy invitation to come to You, to believe and to follow You and Your ways of living in Your Kingdom. Make us holy and fit for we cannot do that ourselves. Forgive us and wash us white as snow so we will be clothed properly for the Banquet. Thank you for your salvation. Thank you Holy Spirit for helping us. Thank you, Lord, Jesus for your work in us.
In Jesus Name, Amen
