OUR VERY LIVES DEPEND ON LOVE, GOD’S LOVE

Being and Becoming Christian

What I need to know…

Know God. God is love.
Know Yourself. God’s love is in us. Live love.
Know Your Message. In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Because of love, Jesus came from God, moved into the neighborhood to live among us, to teach us and then lay down his life for us so that we can see God, know Him more and love Him back.
Know Your Audience. From a heart of love, while living a life of love. fine tune your message so that His Word is expressed in ways that others, seeking Him, understand it.

This may sound very simple, but it is the foundation of my life.

Paul knows God well. He knows what God has given him to be and do. He knows his message well for it is from God. He is very sensitive to his audience in each of his letters to the churches and writes to fit the audience so that there will be no misunderstanding of how to continue being and beocming Christian. Listen in…

1 Corinthians 14, The Message

1-3 Go after a life of love as if your life depended on it—because it does. Give yourselves to the gifts God gives you. Most of all, try to proclaim his truth. If you praise him in the private language of tongues, God understands you but no one else does, for you are sharing intimacies just between you and him. But when you proclaim his truth in everyday speech, you’re letting others in on the truth so that they can grow and be strong and experience his presence with you.

Paul spends the rest of the chapter getting people to understand that their intimate praying with God is not helpful to others to know Him if they don’t understand what you are saying.

What do we learn?
–We need to evaluate our own “talk” and ask ourselves, is what I’m saying out loud helpful to others who are seeking to know God for themselves?
–How many times to we babble on with “church talk” as if we have greater knowledge over a new believer. Is making ourselves feel “higher” because we have learned the language of the church more important than working to make our “talk” more helpful to others trying to figure out how to be and become more like Christ?

Paul explains further…
“So where does it get you, all this speaking in tongues no one understands? It doesn’t help believers, and it only give s unbelievers something to gawk at. Plain truth-speaking, on the other hand, goes straight to the heart of believers and doesn’t get in the way of unbelievers…be courteous and considerate in everything.” 1 Cor 14, The Message

Dear Heavenly Father, Save us from ourselves. Help us to live a life of love today as if our lives depended on it…because it does.
In Jesus Name, Amen
